WELCOME TO EXPERIMENTAL SCHOOL OF BEIHANG UNIVERSITY

Science Classes

The ISSF 2021 offers 5 classes in the field of Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science. Students can register according to their interests, and enroll in one of the classes to enhance knowledge and improve competency of attendees.

C1-MATHS: Some famous mathematical problems

Period 1: What is the difference between Arabic numerals and Eastern Arabic numerals? Why is an irrational number? Why is 0 to the 0th power undefined? There were a lot of great mathematicians in the history whose revolutionary discoveries changed our understanding of the world. We will experience the unique beauty of mathematics by studying these famous mathematical problems in the first class.

Period 2: Two students will be assigned to one group at the end of period 1, and each group needs to find one mathematical problem that you find interesting. You should try to understand the solution of the problem and then present it to everyone in period 2.

Materials to prepare: compass (the one that can measure angle), ruler, protractor, scissor, pencil, eraser, scientific calculator, 10 sheets of A4 paper, laptop

C2-PHYSICS: Making a Qi on your own

Period 1: Qiqi, a vessel used for irrigation in ancient China, is a great invention of the laboring people in the production practice. In this period, we are going to discuss the principle of Qiqi and you will have the chance to make a Qiqi on your own.

Period 2: Each group is going to present the Qiqi that they made, and then you are going to join group discussions, where you can share your opinions on Qiqi. Lastly, we are going to analyze the history of Qiqi and some applications of Qiqi.

Materials to prepare: 3-4 paper cups, two pairs of chopsticks, plastic bottle(500ml), plastic straws that can bend, scissor, plastic container (ideally 25cm*15cm*10cm)

C3-CHEMICAL: The magical water

Period 1: Water is a liquid that is very common in our everyday life, but it has some amazing properties that most of us are not familiar with. We will learn the special properties of water by observation, discussion and experimentation. You will be divided into groups to interpret the properties of water and then use them in creative ways.

Period 2: Each group will present the experiment you have done and evaluate other group's experimental design. Finally, we will work together to develop a conceptual model that can explain the properties of water and then summarize the process of constructing the conceptual model.

Materials to prepare: 1.Video recording equipment;2.markers,white paper;3. Materials for experiment: white plate, smooth spoon, brush, oil (vegetable oil or butter), pure water, coins, salt, paper towels, burette (can be replaced by a spoon if you don't have a burette)

C4-BIOLOGY: Analysis of river pollution types and design of pollution treatment methods

Period 1: As our awareness of the environmental issues rises, environmental restoration became a popular topic. Water pollution treatment is an important part of environmental restoration. In the first period, we are going to discuss the types of water pollution and the reasons for causing them. At the end of period 1, the class is going to be divided into groups. Each group should pick a type of water pollution and look up relevant information.

Period 2: Present the information you found using a PowerPoint. The following details are required: the causes of the pollution, the impact of the pollution, ways to prevent the pollution, ways to treat the pollution, and progress of pollution treatment plans. You will join group discussions after, present your opinions and provide comments on others' as well.

Materials to prepare: 1. Laptop 2. Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint) 3. Paper and markers

C5-COMPUTER SCIENCE: Introduction to the genetic algorithm

Period 1: The activity is called 'Finding the strongest.' The goal of this activity is to find the organism that is most suitable for living in a certain environment. You will first need to understand the genetic algorithm. The next step is to decide the conditions required for the organisms to reproduce, then state your reasons and evidence for selecting those conditions.

Period 2: Every individual varies in abilities such as strength, agility, endurance, intelligence, health points and body fat rate. Group members should discuss which of the abilities are limiting the growth of the organism's population. Lastly, group members should make a PowerPoint to present the reasons and evidence for making that conclusion.

Materials to prepare: 1. Laptop 2. Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint)
